The 2019 World Coffee Roasting Championships! Who won and how did they roast.

Wow, the World Coffee Roasting Championships 2019 in Taiwan are officially complete. We were thrilled to be sponsors and we are excited to share a closer look at the winners' profiles with you here! Below you will find the profiles from the winners' competition roasts using Cropster.

Let's check out a few details about the setup and green coffees at the #WCRCTaipei first.

All competitors were using sample roasters provided by Woots Roasters, Giesen and Stronghold and production roasters provided by Giesen. Giesen sponsored four W6A roasters which were all equipped with Cropster Roasting Intelligence. These 'plug and play' machines are easily connected to Cropster via an Ethernet cable. For competitions like these Cropster runs on an Intel stick computer with a large monitor to highlight all the details for the roasters. BTW - this setup also supports Gas control and Replay assist, but we don't use that for competitions!

A few important notes:

  • Competitors can, but do not have to, track events like First Crack and Color Change with Cropster.
  • Where competitors tracked First Crack it will be shown in the graphs below.
  • The other "bubbles" on the graph highlight comments like gas changes.
  • From the Giesen W6As used at the competition Cropster automatically creates a separate gas, drum pressure and drum rotation log.

What were they roasting?

The green coffees for the practice roasts were sponsored by Olam Coffee. All other green coffees were sponsored by Ally Coffee, Haru Coffee, WESOURCE Coffee and Black Gold Specialty Coffee. Check out all the details here:

Our lovely sales manager Sabine who was supporting the competition on-site with the new World Coffee Roasting Champions 2019 #2 Bogdan, #1 Arseny and #3 Mateusz.

We would also like to say congratulations to all of the other competitors (more information about all of this year's finalists, can be found on the WCRC website here). It's amazing to see how the roasting skill level has increased over the past years, not only globally but also on a national level. We consider it an honor to be able to provide the software at many national competitions and at the world stage. It is a fantastic feeling to support the competitors in their task and help them get the best out of the competition coffees.

We believe that sharing information makes everyone better. That is why we built the ability to share information is built right into Cropster. Of course, if you are working on your secret roast, we can also help keep that quiet too. ;-) But for this year's championships let's go into the details of the winners' profiles.

The finalists roast profiles

We're using the Roast Compare function to give you an overview of all the curves and roast details of both blend and single origin roasts of all three winners. This view shows all temperatures, gas, RoR and also the modulation chart. If you were using Cropster in a live environment (instead of viewing images in a blog), you'd be able to hover over the graphs to see temperature developments, recalculate RoR and more. In case you want to check out the single roast curves, we've added the individual roasts of each winner separately below the Roast Compare view.
