Cropster Roast did not start with Roasting Intelligence. It started with inventory and QC, a simple tool that sold, but at a low price and with limited success. Then one person pushed the founders to build something they had no idea how to build.

We had no client-side coding experience. No apps. No driver work. No hardware. No clue how to measure temperatures. A list long enough to make most teams step back.

When you think of Roasting Intelligence today, with RoR, gas control, replay, blends and AI predictions, we had none. But we built the first version anyway.

The First Scrappy Version

The hardware was a Phidgets 1048, chosen because it shipped with drivers for every platform,w could read almost any thermocouple, and was actually available to order. It was sold without a case. A mold to make the case cost 30k at the time. So we looked for the leanest option: the case was made of Lego. The software read two temperatures and pushed data to Roast. One green lot per roast. No installer. Updates went out by email. So did the log files coming back from Intelligentsia LA roastery.

It was bare-bones. It worked. And that first scrappy version, integrated with green inventory and QC, became the cornerstone of everything Cropster built over the next decade.

Everything that came after was bigger. Data engineering, multithreading, automation, AI predictions, and blends. But it all built on that first MVP. The lesson was simple: build for the biggest current problem, ship it, and improve from there.

The Next Step

The new Cropster Coffee Productivity Platform is the same logic applied to a different problem. 

For most of Cropster’s history, the biggest problem was roasting quality and consistency. That problem is largely solved. The bottleneck has shifted. Today, the biggest threat to a roastery’s margin is not a bad roast profile. It is operational complexity: disconnected systems, manual data entry, production planning built on memory and gut feeling.

The platform is Crospter’s answer to that problem. It connects orders to production, inventory to supply chain, and the roastery floor to the business systems around it. It is not finished. Like every meaningful step forward, it will grow with the roasteries that use it. It is the right foundation. Built for the biggest problems roasteries face right now, with more to follow.

The first releases reflect that thinking. Crospter’s Business Systems Connectivity (API) connects the roastery to the business systems around it. Thus eliminating the manual data entry that costs roasteries hours every week. Minimum Stock Levels bring demand-led production planning to finished goods inventory so the platform tells you what to roast next, based on what is actually on the shelf. More is coming. 

Green coffee contract management is coming next, reducing the effort on the buying side. Non-coffee products, Bill of Material, and more planning features are in the pipeline. The goal is the same as it has always been: focus on the coffee, your suppliers, and your customers. Not data entry.

Why It Matters

Cropster has always been a business tool. The roasters who understood that earliest, who saw data not just as a quality record but as a business asset, built operations that scaled without chaos. The platform makes that possible for every roastery, not just the ones that figured it out themselves. 

The original Phidgets unit still exists. The Lego case did not survive in the office, but it is still running at customers’ sites over a decade later. The case changes, the approach stayed, and it is the same approach behind every feature that ships next.
