Ever roasted some beans and wondered, "How do I compare these batches and see what worked best?" Well, wonder no more! Cropster has you covered and then some. Let’s quickly dive into the Roast Compare Report, a powerful tool in your coffee roasting toolbox.

Why use it?

Imagine having all your roast information in one place: curves, comments, and even cupping data (tasting notes)! The more info you track, the richer your comparisons become.

Comparing roasts is a simple route to better coffee and one of Cropster’s most used features by roasters.

With the Roast Compare Report, you can:

  • See the bigger picture: Gather all your roasting data and cupping results to understand how your choices affect the final flavor.
  • Find your sweet spot: Connect the dots between roasting events and taste to dial in your perfect roast profile.
  • Learn from experience: Compare past roasts to identify patterns and improve consistency.

Getting started:

  1. First you’ll need to log in to Cropster's online platform, C-sar.
(if you’re investigating Cropster remember there’s a free trial and a demo instance where you can check this out)
  2. Click "Reports" on the main menu and select "Roast Compare Report."
  3. Choose the roasts you want to compare by ticking the boxes next to their PR numbers.
  4. Scroll down or click the green button to see your Roast Compare Report.

The roasts overview page is your starting point to compare roasts. All your roasts are there because Cropster logs them automatically!

Understanding the Report:

The report has three main sections:

  • Display: Choose what data you want to see, like roast curves, modulation charts, and tables.
  • Settings: Fine-tune your view by adjusting temperature, rate of rise (RoR), zoom level, and more.
  • Tables: Compare different aspects of your roasts, like overall quality, brew quality, statistics, and consistency.

Drill into roast details with Roast Compare using simple point and click access even more roast information and insights.

Digging deeper:

  • Quality Table: Analyze different aspects of your cupping, like average scores, flavor descriptors, and individual evaluator comments.
  • Brew Quality Table: Compare how your roasts extract and translate to the final cup.
  • Statistics Table: Get detailed stats on your roasts, like development time, first crack, and roast value
  • Consistency Table: See if your roasts met your goals and identify any deviations.

Capturing those production cuppings in Cropster is simple and once you have them they are gold when it comes to identifying better roasts and brews over time!

Bonus Tip: While analyzing your data, you can even set a new "reference roast" by clicking the star next to its PR number. This helps you compare future roasts against your ideal profile. Plus, Cropster can even be set to tell you when a specific roast outperforms all the others … helping roasters automate continuous improvement.

FAQs:

  • Can I add/remove roasts? Yes! Just scroll up or click the checkboxes next to the roasts you want to include/exclude.
  • Can I edit my roasts? We recommend using the Curve Designer for adjustments. This way, you keep your original roast profile plus the edited one for comparison.

Remember, practice makes perfect! The more you use the Roast Compare Report, the better you'll understand your roasting process and create consistently delicious coffee. Happy roasting!
